Jets July Invitational 2026: MAGA Sweeps Six Divisions as BTYC Rules the All-Around

Gymnastics Victoria hadn't published results from the Jets July Invitational (25-26 July) by the time I sat down to write this, so host club Jets Gymnastics emailed over the full scoresheets directly: fifteen team events and eight individual all-around fields across Levels 3 to 7. It's one of the biggest single competitions I've covered this season, so let's get into the numbers.

MAGA'S SIX-DIVISION SWEEP

Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy (MAGA) had the most complete team day of any club at Jets, winning six team events spread across four different levels, and its Level 4 program was untouchable: both the Division 1 and Division 2 squads swept every apparatus and the all-around title in their respective fields. The Division 1 team won vault, bars, beam and floor on its way to a 113.7, beating Niddrie by 1.85, while the Division 2 team did the same across all four apparatus for a 108.825, 3.775 clear of EKGA. MAGA's Level 5 Division 1 team added another win, by 3.4 (110.775), with Luckshetha Mauran topping the individual all-around there too on 37.275, the best all-around score of the competition outside Level 7. Its Level 3 Division 1 team won by 3.825 (108.0). In Level 5 Division 2's Part B pool, MAGA's 106.325 held off Jets by 1.05.

MAGA's sixth win was its closest: its Level 7 Division 2 team edged EKGA by just 1.05, 132.45 to 131.4, tying its own Level 5 Division 2 Part B result as the tightest team finish of the day.

BTYC OWNS THE ALL-AROUND

BTYC Gymnastics' individual gymnasts set the tone across the Level 5 and 6 fields, winning four of the competition's eight individual all-around titles. Valerie Yan took out Level 5 Division 2's Part A pool (35.475), Kotomi Lee won Level 6 Division 1 with 37.075, and Madeline Garbutt claimed Level 6 Division 3 (32.25). Elisha Choi made it four, winning Level 5 Division 3 outright with 34.75, in a division where BTYC swept the entire podium: Choi, Fiona Liu and Claire Lavender finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. BTYC complemented that individual form with four team wins of its own, in Level 4 Division 3, Level 5 Division 3, Level 6 Division 1 and Level 6 Division 3.

Its Level 5 Division 3 team won by 8.325, one of the widest team margins of the day, while its Level 6 Division 1 team held off a tight three-way finish, winning by 1.975 with MLC and Jets just 2.1 points behind across the top three.

MLC'S LEVEL 7 POWERHOUSE

Level 7 is the only field at Jets scored on the open-ended D and E system rather than the compulsory 10.0 scale used at Levels 3 to 6, so its scores aren't directly comparable to the rest of the competition. Within that field, though, MLC was clearly the strongest team, posting 143.1 on the back of the division's best beam (36.55) and bars (35.35) rotations. Individually, Kristen Canoy won the all-around title with 48.35, edging teammate Miranda Hale (48.2) by just 0.15. Hale posted the division's best single bars score (12.05) and best single beam score (12.5), while Canoy's 12.55 on floor was the best single apparatus score of the field. The best individual vault score, though, went to a home favourite: Jets' Abigail Mecklem posted 12.1 in the same field.

PROMOTION WATCH

With the season well underway and results starting to build up, I'm adding a new recurring feature to these wrap-ups: Promotion Watch. Gymnastics Victoria's rule is that a gymnast or team scoring at or above their division's cutoff score twice in a season must move up a division. The cutoff itself is a fixed score for each level and division, it's the number of times you clear it in a season that's being tracked. Here's who's on the radar after Jets.

Two individuals have now cleared the cutoff twice this season. BTYC's Elisha Choi won Level 5 Division 3 at Jets with 34.75, comfortably clear of the division's 34.0 cutoff, after also going over it at the BTYC WAG Junior Invite on 12 July (35.3). MAGA's Peyton Baldwin has done the same in Level 7 Division 2, finishing runner-up at Jets with 44.1 against a 44.0 cutoff, after clearing it at that same BTYC event as well (44.05). Both gymnasts were still competing in their usual division as of Jets, so it's worth watching whether either moves up before their next start.

Two more athletes cleared the cutoff for the first time this season at Jets: Hannah Fanning (MYC) won Level 6 Division 2 with 36.4, just over the 36.0 cutoff, and Sienna Caputo (EKGA) won Level 7 Division 2 with 44.75, clear of the 44.0 mark. Neither shows an earlier qualifying score in my results database, though with Gymnastics Victoria's own publishing running behind this season, I can't rule out a gap in my records, so one more result like this would put both in promotion territory.

It's not only about who's over. EKGA's Kayla Nadzielski finished third in that same Level 7 Division 2 field with 43.95, just 0.05 short of the cutoff, the closest miss of the day. And BTYC's Level 5 Division 3 podium has its own subplot: alongside Elisha Choi's second over-cutoff score, teammates Fiona Liu (33.8) and Claire Lavender (33.575) both cleared 34.0 at that BTYC event last month but came in just under it at Jets. Nothing to report there yet, but if that trio keeps threatening the mark, more than one of them may find themselves in Division 2 before long.

Gymnastics Victoria's rule technically covers Level 3 and 4 teams too, but no team went over its cutoff at Jets itself. MAGA's Level 4 Division 2 team is still one to watch: it already cleared the 109.5 cutoff once this season, 111.8 at the Knox WAG Junior Invitational on 18 July, and came within 0.675 of doing it again at Jets (108.825). Normally I'd hedge a story like this, since a different lineup at the team's next start would reset the count, but I happen to know this particular squad has run with the same group of gymnasts all season. So if they keep this form up, there's a possible promotion to Division 1 in their future.

A BIG DAY FOR THE HOST CLUB

It wasn't just the results that stood out. Host club Jets Gymnastics fielded 14 teams across the two days, more than any other club, and told me spots filled within a day of entries opening, with some sessions drawing more than 190 spectators. Jets also used the occasion to support a local business, handing every competing gymnast a keyring from The Cartwheel Collective, a Melbourne gymnastics merchandise and choreography business, at the end of each session.

Smaller clubs had their own moments to celebrate too. Knox Gym Club posted individual vault medals in Level 5 Division 1, gold for Allison Shuffleton and bronze for Jacinta Lin, on the way to a third-place team finish, and celebrated a bronze team result in Division 2 under Coach Zoe. Essendon Keilor Gym Academy (EKGA)'s Level 5 trio, built around an individual bars silver from Anika Van Kalken, took team silver, while EKGA's two Level 3 teams finished first and second overall, sweeping every apparatus between them, exactly as the club's own recap described it.
