2026 WAG Regionals: Who's Through to States

All seven of Victoria's 2026 WAG Regional Championships have now been run, from Metro East, North East and West on 5 September through to South East on 13 September. Rather than recap seven separate results pages one by one, I want to focus on the thing everyone's actually asking about: who's through to Victorian Championships. Gymnastics Victoria's qualification process works completely differently depending on level, so I've split this into two parts: Levels 3 and 4, which run off a fixed number of places per region, and Levels 5 to 7, which run off qualifying scores.

PART 1: LEVELS 3 AND 4 (AVAILABLE PLACES)

Levels 3 and 4 work off a fixed number of available places per region. Gymnastics Victoria hands each of the seven regions a set number of places per level and division, and it's simply the top-ranked teams within that region, by score at the regional championships, that fill them. There's no qualifying score involved at this level, just where you finish. I've worked out the number of places per region myself from my own competition results data; I don't have Gymnastics Victoria's official number confirmed, so treat the table below as my best estimate rather than gospel.

Gymnastics Victoria's handbook also states a flat cap of 16 teams invited per level and division. Add up any column above and it doesn't reach 16, so from what I understand, the remaining spots are chosen by highest scoring teams, regardless of region. That's the part I'm hypothesizing below: who's most likely to fill those remaining spots, based on score alone. To be clear, that's just my understanding of how this works, so like I said, these are more like educated guesses, read them as should-be's, not locks, until GV's official list comes out.

Level 3 Division 1. Only 11 teams competed in this division across the whole state, well under the 16-team cap, so from what I understand, every one of them should be heading to States: Geelong YMCA Gym Club Red (Metro West), Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy (Metro East), Waverley Gymnastics Centre Red (Metro South), Cheltenham Youth Club Blue (Metro South), Pulse Gymnastics (Metro North Central), Chamford Gymnastics Club (Metro South), Waverley Gymnastics Centre Blue (Metro South), Melbourne City Gymnastics Blue (Metro South), Cheltenham Youth Club Green (Metro South), Geelong YMCA Gym Club Black (Metro West), and Melbourne City Gymnastics White (Metro South). It'll just be a smaller field at States this year, and that's fine by me, honestly. These are just kids, and at this level I'd rather see them all get the experience of competing at States and finding out what it's all about, before things get more serious in the higher levels.

Level 3 Division 2. Fourteen teams will be punching their states card in Division 2: Pulse Gymnastics (Metro North Central), BTYC Gymnastics Navy (Metro North Central), Niddrie Gymnastic Club White (Metro West), Maffra Gymnastic Club (South East), LFK Dance and Gym Blue (Metro West), Niddrie Gymnastic Club Silver (Metro West), Edge Gymnastics (Metro South), Diamond Gymnastics Club (Metro South), Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy (Metro East), Flyaway Gymnastics Club (North East), Eastern Gymnastics Club Blue (Metro East), Strive Gymnastics (West), Casey Gymnastics (Metro East), and BGH (West). The two most likely wildcard fillers by score are both Metro West squads that didn't automatically qualify on podium finishes: Niddrie Gymnastic Club Aqua (106.081) and Essendon Keilor Gym Academy (105.362). Six more teams exist below them (Metro West, Metro East and Metro South squads all in the mix), so there's genuine competition for those last two spots.

Level 3 Division 3. Division 3 sees another 14 teams lock in a place on their region's podium: East Gippsland Gym Club (South East), Casey Gymnastics Silver (Metro East), PIT Gymnastics Blue (Metro North Central), Werribee Gymnastic Club Green (Metro West), Leongatha Gymnastic Club Yellow (South East), Gymnastics Unlimited Aust Ltd Red (Metro West), Aerodynamix Gymnastics (Metro East), Essendon Keilor Gym Academy (Metro West), Flyaway Gymnastics Club (North East), Eureka Gymnastics Club (West), Mildura Gymnastics Centre (West), Moyhu and District Youth Club (North East), Strive Gymnastics Pink (West), and Dolphin Gymnastics Club Blue (Metro South). The two likely wildcard fillers: Pulse Gymnastics (Metro North Central, 104.175) and Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy (Metro East, 102.607). There are a further 21 teams below the cutoff in this division, a genuinely deep field.

Level 4 Division 1. Onto Level 4, and Division 1 fills 10 of its spots on podium finishes at regionals alone: Niddrie Gymnastic Club White (Metro West), Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy Pink (Metro East), Cheltenham Youth Club Blue (Metro South), Waverley Gymnastics Centre Red (Metro South), Chamford Gymnastics Club (Metro South), Geelong YMCA Gym Club Red (Metro West), Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy Orange (Metro East), Pulse Gymnastics (Metro North Central), Geelong YMCA Gym Club Black (Metro West), and Strive Gymnastics (West). Six wildcard spots are up for grabs here, the biggest shortfall outside Division 1's L3 counterpart, and the next six by score are Edge Gymnastics (Metro South, 108.275), Cheltenham Youth Club Green (Metro South, 108.25), Melbourne City Gymnastics Blue (Metro South, 106.625), MLC Gymnastics Club Green (Metro East, 106.6), Niddrie Gymnastic Club Aqua (Metro West, 106.281), and Waverley Gymnastics Centre Blue (Metro South, 104.825). Only two teams would miss out even then.

Level 4 Division 2. Division 2 sees 14 teams qualify on their region's podium: Aerodynamix Gymnastics Yellow (Metro East), Leongatha Gymnastic Club (South East), PIT Gymnastics Blue (Metro North Central), Essendon Keilor Gym Academy Black (Metro West), BTYC Gymnastics (Metro North Central), Diamond Gymnastics Club (Metro South), Cheltenham Youth Club (Metro South), Flyaway Gymnastics Club (North East), LFK Dance and Gym (Metro West), Niddrie Gymnastic Club Navy (Metro West), Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy Purple (Metro East), Jets Gymnastics Red (West), Aerodynamix Gymnastics Blue (Metro East), and Strive Gymnastics (West). The two likely wildcard fillers: Maffra Gymnastic Club (South East, 106.781) and PIT Gymnastics White (Metro North Central, 106.55), with 22 more teams below them, the deepest field of all six divisions.

Level 4 Division 3. Last but not least, Division 3 comes closest to filling the cap outright, with 15 teams qualifying on their region's podium: Bentleigh McKinnon Gymnastics Club (Metro South), Werribee Gymnastic Club Green (Metro West), Casey Gymnastics Silver (Metro East), East Gippsland Gym Club (South East), Flyaway Gymnastics Club (North East), BTYC Gymnastics (Metro North Central), Athleta Gymnastics (Metro West), Strive Gymnastics Pink (West), Mildura Gymnastics Centre (West), Wyndham City Gymnastics (Metro West), PIT Gymnastics Aqua (Metro North Central), Casey Gymnastics Navy (Metro East), Eureka Gymnastics Club (West), Dolphin Gymnastics Club Blue (Metro South), and Nunawading Gymnastics and Sports Club (Metro East), just one shy of the 16-team cap. Gymnastics Unlimited Aust Ltd Red (Metro West, 101.6) is the standout single wildcard candidate by score.

PART 2: LEVELS 5 TO 7 (A GYM DAD'S BEST ATTEMPT AT THE HANDBOOK)

For Levels 5 to 7, Gymnastics Victoria's qualification process (Handbook section 9.4.3.2) works completely differently to the fixed number of places per region used for Levels 3 and 4. I'll be upfront: I've read through it as a layperson, not an official, and I'm not 100% sure I've got every detail right. Take this as my best attempt at translating a long governing document, not gospel.

As I understand it, each level and division gets somewhere between 64 and 80 total spaces at Junior Victorian Championships (teams and individuals combined, capped by how many sessions the event can run). The priority order is roughly:

1. Each region's single top team qualifies automatically, but only if it clears a minimum team score.
2. Each region then gets up to four more individual spots for its best all-around gymnasts, provided they clear an individual qualifying score and haven't already made it in via their team.
3. Division 1 splits its allocation evenly between Under and Open age brackets.
4. Whatever's left in the pool goes to the next-best scores across the state, regardless of region.

One quirk worth flagging: if a region's top team misses the score, that region's automatic team spot for the division just goes unfilled, it doesn't transfer to another region's team. It converts into extra individual and wildcard spots instead. That's my reading anyway. The handbook actually cites "section 12.4.5" for the exact mechanism, but the Women's Artistic Gymnastics chapter's own numbering only runs from section 1 to section 9, and there's no section 12.4 anywhere else in the document either, so whatever that cross-reference was supposed to point to, it isn't in the copy that's publicly available.

With that framing, here's what the actual regional scores show.

Level 5. Division 1 (qualifying score 103.00) had five of the seven regions represented, and four of those five top teams cleared it: Waverley Gymnastics Centre Red (Metro South) led on 112.447, Pulse Gymnastics Teal (Metro North Central) posted 112.057, Niddrie Gymnastic Club Navy (Metro West) 111.44, and Melbourne Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy (Metro East) 108.914. West's Strive Gymnastics also competed but fell short at 99.122, so on my reading, West's Division 1 team spot doesn't get filled this year. Division 2 (100.00) and Division 3 (97.50) were far friendlier: all seven regions were represented in each, and every region's top team cleared the score.

Level 6. Division 1 (103.00) had four of the seven regions represented, all four top teams clearing it: Niddrie Gymnastic Club (Metro West) 110.19, Cheltenham Youth Club (Metro South) 110.05, BTYC Gymnastics (Metro North Central) 107.775, MLC Gymnastics Club (Metro East) 106.756. Division 2 (100.00) had six of the seven regions represented, all six top teams clearing it. Division 3 (97.50) had six of the seven regions represented (Metro South didn't field a team here), but this is where it got tight: BTYC Gymnastics (Metro North Central) came in at 97.175, just 0.325 short, and East Gippsland Gym Club (South East) missed at 96.133. The other four regions' top teams all cleared, led by Strive Gymnastics (West) on 105.828.

Level 7. Division 1 (124.00) had five of the seven regions represented, all five regions' top teams clearing it, topped by Geelong YMCA Gym Club Red (Metro West) on 139.95. Division 2 (118.00) had six of the seven regions represented, all six regions' top teams clearing it, topped by Essendon Keilor Gym Academy (Metro West) on 135.0.

So across both levels, only three regions' top teams missed their qualifying score outright: West at Level 5 Division 1, and Metro North Central and South East at Level 6 Division 3.

ON INDIVIDUALS, AND THE DIVISION 1 AGE SPLIT

I'd like to hand you a clean list of who's claimed the individual spots too, but two things stopped me doing that with confidence. First, the top-4-per-region individual step only applies to gymnasts who haven't already qualified through their team, and my results data doesn't link individual gymnasts to their team rosters, so I can't reliably work out who that excludes. Second, Division 1's Under and Open age brackets aren't tagged separately in my data, and it shows: at Metro East, Division 1 for Levels 5, 6 and 7 all produced two separate "rank 1" results at the same competition, which only makes sense if two age-bracket leaderboards got merged into one in my system. Until that's sorted out, I don't trust any Division 1 individual list I could produce enough to publish it as this article's word on who's in.

SOMETHING ODD IN METRO EAST

While I was looking at all the data for this recap, something jumped out at me. Metro East's scores, across multiple levels and divisions, tended to sit below the other six regions'. It wasn't isolated to one level either, Metro East's median team score came in below the other regions' median in 9 of its 12 Level 3 to Level 6 divisions, by as much as 4.9 points in Level 4 Division 3.

A few results really drove that home. Metro East's Level 5 Division 1 top team, on 108.914, was beaten outright by Metro North Central's Division 2 top team on 110.766, the higher division's best score losing to the lower division's best score in the same level. The same thing happened on the individual side at Level 5, Metro East's Division 1 AA champion (36.808) came in under Metro North Central's Division 2 AA champion (37.116). And at Level 3, Metro East's Division 2 top team (104.889) was beaten by South East's Division 3 top team (108.711).

I was actually there on the day, and the gymnastics looked solid to me, certainly good enough that these numbers surprised me looking back at them now. I'm not a judge, and I've got no idea what the panel was seeing that I wasn't, so take this as an observation from the data rather than any comment on how the day was scored.

One score from the day really stood out. Level 7 Division 1's Quinn Dunlop (MAG) put up vault, beam and floor numbers that would sit near the top of the field on their own, but bars didn't go her way. I think she had something like three falls during her routine, for a 7.2 that was well below her own season bars average of 8.99. Swap in her best bars score of the season, 10.05, instead and her all-around total climbs to somewhere around 45.35, enough to have put her within touching distance of the podium rather than down in 13th. Bars has never been her strongest apparatus, but even against her own bars history, 7.2 was a rough one, so it really was just one of those days.

That's gymnastics though. It's probably a bittersweet result to look back on, three genuinely excellent scores next to the one that didn't go to plan. I don't know Quinn personally, but I do know her coaches, and I've no doubt she already understands how to take the good with the bad. My own daughter looks up to her at training, and if there's a lesson in a day like this one, it's the one every gymnast learns eventually: you take the result as it comes, and you turn up again next season.

None of this necessarily means anything, of course. Lower division gymnasts have good days, higher division gymnasts have bad ones, that's just sport, and this could easily be exactly that. I just thought it was an interesting quirk in the data worth pointing out.

That's my best reading of a long, technical process, built from score sheets rather than an official qualifying list, not Gymnastics Victoria's own word on who's actually heading to Junior Victorian Championships.
